Become a character animator, concept artist or game developer.

Are you a fan of Hayao Miyazaki movies?  Do you have a soft spot for Disney or Anime? If you’re captivated by the hand-drawn characters of legends like Miyazaki and Walt Disney, 2D animation could be your ultimate calling.

Sure, a lot has changed since the early days. 2D characters can now be digitally animated and we can use Adobe Flash and After Effects to bring them to life. Today’s 2D animators do everything from straight ahead digital animation, to puppetry animation, to hybrid forms of 2D animation.

But the essence of 2D animation remains. It’s a traditional hand-drawn craft. It’s natural and intuitive. It has drawing techniques and anatomical knowledge at its very core. Movements are broken down into main poses, called ‘keys’, which tell a story when put into a sequence. The sequence is then composited and backed up by dialogue and music.

For purists and passionate artists, there’s nothing quite like it!

Kick start your animation training with an introduction to the theory and practice of animation principles.

  • Learn about where it all began, and how to start creating your own animation.
  • Master the fundamentals of pictorial composition – think colour, tone, line, scale and media; plus dip your toes AAAinto anatomy studies, life drawing and character design.
  • Our highly-anticipated studio sessions will see you start to build your 2D animation skills – it’s here you’ll learn AAAfoundation animation techniques like movement and dialogue, and build your knowledge of software, workflow AAAand industry practice.
  • Work collaboratively, using the industry standard production pipeline to create an inspiring animation project AAAwith your fellow classmates.
  • Visual storytelling will be a vital part of your craft. We’ll teach you how to turn your brilliant ideas AAAinto storyboards and comics, and equip you with some invaluable cinematography techniques.

Your first year also comes with a healthy dose of technology training – you’ll work with current industry standard software to develop your understanding of 2D and 3D animation mediums, and you’ll explore some mind-bending ways to use compositing. You’ll even produce your own film clips.

This is where the art of emotion comes in!

  • We’ll teach you how to inject emotion into your characters to bring them to life, plus you’ll hone your world AAAbuilding, conceptualising and narrative design skills.
  • As you progress into your second year we’ll up the ante on your studio projects, giving you loads of exciting AAAopportunities to utilise your knowledge in a practical way.
