Head of Animation at Weta Digital visits AC

10.20.2015

Animation College students were treated to a visit from Richard Francis-Moore who is Visual Effects Supervisor at Weta Digital on the 23rd of September.

Richard shared the extensive experience he’s had working on some of Weta’s largest features, including some ground breaking character work on Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Dawn of the planet of the Apes as well as Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin.

Today Richard is Head of the Animation Department and ensures that Weta Digital has the best animation tools and animators in the world. This key role helps to drive development so that Weta can constantly be pushing the envelope of animation technology and treat audiences to even bigger visual spectacles on the silver screen.

Students thoroughly enjoyed Richard’s intro to Weta Digital and were finally able to ask those burning questions about what it’s like to work for one of the world’s top animation studios.

2nd Year DAA 3D student Micheal Tysoe had this to say: 'It was fantastic. Richard had a lot of very useful information, was very approachable, and for those of us who got to show him our work he gave very honest criticism. I don't think anyone could've left the event without being inspired!'

We’d like to thank Ivy at Weta Digital for organizing this visit and Richard for taking the time to meet with Animation College students.
